In the south of the Adriatic, one of the greenest islands, the seventh largest, is the island of Korcula. Its area is 279 km2 and is inhabited by about 16,000 residents. The island was the resort of the ancient Greeks even 2,000 years ago. On this island was born world famous traveler Marco Polo, and his house is visited by many tourists.
The main town on the island is Korcula, which is a typical medieval Dalmatian town surrounded by walls. The old town is dominated by the Cathedral of St. Mark which was built in the Gothic-Renaissance style somewhere in the 15th century. In written documents the city was first mentioned in 1214. The island of Korcula can be reached from all major ferry ports in the Adriatic and the nearest is the ferry port in Dubrovnik. Travel agencies often organize special trips to this beautiful island.
